FAQ
How long will it take to have the floor installed?
Installation is weather-pending, but in most cases, it will take two days. Some companies promise “1-day installs.” While this may seem convenient, when investing this kind of money into a long-lasting floor, you want peace of mind knowing no corners are cut. We take two days to complete our projects to ensure every aspect of your new floor is perfect.
What is the difference between a professional installer and a DIY kit?
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Preparation is everything when it comes to floor coatings. DIY kits tell you to clean the floor thoroughly, and acid etch the concrete. It seems easy, but not preparing the concrete sufficiently to bond with the coating applied means it could quickly fail in many areas, leaving you to remove and recoat the floor again within several years.
We use industrial equipment and diamond grind the surface to ensure the proper concrete surface profile to create a cohesive solid bond. Doing a DIY without the appropriate knowledge and experience is also challenging. Most DIY kits also have a low percentage of solids, meaning you have very little time to apply it and half of what you put on the floor evaporates, compared to professional 100% solids, where it all stays where we put it.
Additionally, the average DIY kit provides 5-10 lbs of flakes for your entire floor making it easy to have an inconsistent or undesirable finish. We will put around 100 lbs of flakes in the average 2-car garage which adds depth and strength to your floor as well as a consistent appearance throughout. Finally, even if you compare the two side by side with no issues on the installation, you will find, on average, that a professional coating is three to six times thicker than a DIY coating. Long story short, find a professional to install your floor if you want longevity and protection.
How long does it take to cure?
We will select a base coat formulated for your concrete needs to ensure maximum adhesion and protection. We use a polyaspartic top coat that enables you to walk on the floor 24 hours after installation. Seventy-two hours later, you can drive on it. The floor will take seven days to be fully cured. We recommend that if you park your car in the garage within the first seven days (while it’s curing), leave it outside for 30 minutes after a long commute to let the tires cool and avoid tire staining. In cooler weather and freezing temperatures, the time you can walk on it after installation may be delayed, speak with your installer for more information.
How do I take care of my floor after installation?
Only a little is required to clean your floor once it is installed. But simple care and maintenance will help keep your floor working for you and last the test of time. You can easily clean your floor with a dust and broom, water and soap, or even take a pressure washer to it. If there are stains, tire marks, chemical spills, etc., you can use a bio-friendly cleaner such as simple green to spray on spots and wipe off. Do try to clean any chemicals immediately, as neglecting the spills can change the floor’s appearance over time. Be mindful of highly corrosive toxins like battery acid, which will eat through the coating and weaken the surrounding areas. Routine care will go a long way and keep your floor looking sharp for years.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes! We offer a 15-year warranty on our flake and quartz floors, protecting you from delamination, chipping, and cracking.
How soon can you do our floor?
After the initial consultation/discovery of what we offer, we will promptly send you an estimate. After both parties have signed the agreement, we will order your job-specific materials if you want to proceed with us. Once the materials have arrived and are in our possession, we will contact you immediately and set an installation date that works best with you.
What is required of the homeowner and what do we need to move out of our garage?
We need at least 6 feet of working space outside the project area to set up a floor workstation. If there are any pilot lights (furnace, water heater, etc.), they must be turned off during the installation. We use chemicals with flammable vapors while in their liquid state, so leaving pilots on is dangerous for both the installer and the homeowner. It is essential to ventilate the space for 4 hours after installation. Once twenty-four hours have passed, you may reignite the pilot lights. Our installers will always confirm that the pilots are turned off.
Everything on the floor must be moved out, and the surface needs to be clean and debris-free when we arrive. This saves time and allows us to finish your floor faster so you can get back on it. Anything hanging on the walls is okay unless it obstructs the stem wall.
Should I be worried about hazardous chemicals and odors?
Leave the hazardous chemicals to us! All the coatings we use are low VOC. Once the floor is solid, it is no longer considered hazardous. You will notice an odor after the installation, which is nothing to worry about. We recommend leaving your garage open for at least four hours to ventilate, and in the coming days, the odor will disappear.
What is this going to cost me?
There are many different things to take into account when factoring in cost. It depends on the size and the condition of the space. If there are a lot of deep cracks in the concrete, it may increase the cost of repair and patching. Every job is unique based on the wants and needs of the customer. We need to see and test your concrete before giving you an accurate price. Schedule an estimate, and we will let you know your options.
Can this be done outside?
Yes, we use several products that will hold up through any weather. If you or your business need to beautify an outdoor space, give us a call!
